Electronic Health Records

Electronic health records (EHR) are crucial to the advancement of telehealth. As a complementary piece of telehealth services, an electronic health record (EHR) is a must have. The technology to transmit health care images across a distance is only one aspect of delivering those services. It is crucial to also have a patient’s medical record available in a timely, portable and electronic format, so that it is available at a moment's notice to the provider who needs it.

CTeL wholeheartedly supports a full and robust vision of telehealth that includes electronic medical records. In the deliberations about electronic health records, it is crucial for the telehealth community to not only address data standards and interoperability, but also to address the fundamental challenge of acceptance by providers, consumer advocates, and patients as well as the legal and regulatory issues of privacy, and fraud and abuse. Now is the time to begin communicating the value and importance of EHRs to the public, providers, and health systems across the country as a part of larger effort to communicate the value of telehealth.

In the recently released report by the President's IT Advisory Committee, “Revolutionizing Health Care Through Information Technology” it states that federal health care entities have achieved significant performance and productivity benefits though major investments in EHRs, computerized physician order entry (CPOEs). Public policy makers need to be educated about the advantages of leveraging the work begun by the Federal government to create change in the broader health care marketplace through health IT. CTeL has an excellent track record of doing just that!

CTeL continues its efforts to communicate the value of providing health services across a distance and look forward to organizations interested in this effort becoming actively involved. Please contact us at info@CTeL.org

CTeL fully supports efforts to move to a system whereby health care is provided across a distance accompanied and supported by electronic health records. There is an important role for CTeL to play in addressing the legal, regulatory, and legislative issues surrounding EHRs.
